MG George Muthoot
Mathai George Muthoot Jr. is an Indian
entrepreneur and businessman. He is the third generation of his family to be
chairman of the Muthoot Group (founded by his grandfather in 1887), and
the Lay Trustee of the Indian Orthodox Church. He is also a member of the
National Executive Committee of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce
and Industry (FICCI) and the Chairman of the FICCI Kerala State Council.
Forbes Asia Magazine listed him as the 50th richest man
in India in 2011.
In
the past 12 months rising gold prices more than doubled the shares of Muthoot
Finance, listed flagship of M.G.George Muthoot’s Muthoot Group, returning him
to the top 100 ranks. With his 3 brothers, he runs India’s leading lender
against gold, founded by his grandfather in 1887. Muthoot Finance has more than
4,200 retail branches and 6 million customers. It was recently
investigated by the income tax authorities. The company said it was a routine
check and that Muthoot Finance was the top corporate taxpayer in its home state
of Kerala. He enjoys listening to south Indian classical music.
He
is among the top 100 richest Indians and Forbes global billionaires. Ranks 59th
on the Forbes India Rich List 2016 with net worth $1.92 B.
